Step 3: Pass PLAB 2 – Show You Are Ready to Work as a Doctor in the UK
If PLAB 1 was about knowledge, PLAB 2 is about showing you can actually do the job. It is the part where the GMC tests how you think, how you act, and how you communicate in real-life situations.
What the Exam Looks Like
PLAB 2 is an OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) with 16 stations. Each station lasts eight minutes, plus a short reading time before you start. You might be taking a history from a patient with chest pain, explaining a diagnosis, demonstrating an examination, handling an ethical dilemma, or managing an acutely unwell patient.
The focus is not only on whether you “know” what to do, but whether you can show it in a calm, professional, and safe way. Even if you forget a small detail, good communication and safe decision-making can save the station.
Why You Should Book Early
PLAB 2 is only held in one place : the GMC assessment centre in Manchester, and slots fill up quickly. Once you pass PLAB 1, do not wait around. Book as soon as you can because the waiting list can be several months long.
How I Prepared
There are countless preparation routes out there — online materials, group role-play sessions, and intensive courses. I started with Ahmed Elseidy’s course for my foundation knowledge. It helped me structure my approach to stations and gave me a clear understanding of what examiners look for.
After that, I travelled to the UK a few weeks before my exam and did several mock exams to get used to the actual environment. These mocks were invaluable — they gave me a taste of the real pressure and helped me refine small details like timing, body language, and empathy.
I studied for five months in total. Throughout that time, I role-played almost daily with a friend. We challenged each other with tricky stations and kept feedback honest. That constant practice made me more natural and confident when speaking to patients.
On Exam Day
I passed 14 out of 16 stations. The one thing I cannot stress enough is this — PLAB 2 is less about showing off rare knowledge and more about proving you are a safe and professional doctor. You need to speak clearly, be respectful, maintain eye contact, and involve the patient in decisions.
Pass Rates and Cost
The pass rate for PLAB 2 is usually around 66 percent. In 2024, about 19,500 candidates sat the exam and around 12,900 passed. The exam fee is currently about £934.
To pass, you need to achieve at least the overall pass mark set for that exam sitting, which is determined using the borderline regression scoring method. This means the exact number changes slightly each time, but it usually falls around 11 out of 16 stations equivalent when scores are converted. It is important to remember that it is not just the number of stations you pass, but also the score you get in each, so consistency matters.
Travel and Accommodation Tips
If you are coming from overseas, plan your trip carefully. Book flights early, and try to arrive at least a few days before your exam so you can adjust, practice, and visit the centre. Manchester has plenty of budget-friendly accommodations close to the GMC building, which makes it easier on exam day.
